My last post (in fact my only post) on this board was about 4 years ago just after I'd heard about the death of Stevie Murphy. I learned of steve's sad passing after discovering Lloret de Mar Old stuff. Now i haven't posted since, however i do look at the site on a regular basisbecause Lloret de Mar always has and always will be a special place to me.
Having holidayed as as a young lad in Lloret in 81,82,83,84 and 86, I returned in 1996 with my wife and kids to find nothing much had changed and lloret was has it had been 10 years earlier.
For whatever reason, I (or we) never returned. I learned of the sad deaths of both Steve and Rish from The Old Stuff site, and both tragic events brought memories flooding back of the magical weeks spent in Lloret, in particular in The Texas, The Scotch Corner and later in Buzbys.
Move on 20 years to this year 2016, and my (now) Brother in Law was looking for a venue for his stag weekend. He asked for my thoughts.......Bingo....It has to be Lloret de Mar.
It was agreed, we booked the flights and four nights in the Don Juan. I'd never stayed there before, always opting for the The Samba. However, it was cheap as Chips and literally around the corner of where the Texas Saloon was. A new pub had sprung up directly opposite, The Cafe Tyroll !! An Alpine style pub on the Costa Brava Turns out, it was superb. The Landlord (owner) and his wife where fantastic hosts and it became our "homebase Bar" for the whole duration of our stay.
Well we arrived, the Don Juan was where I expected it to be and lo and behold so was the Texas, although it now calls itself the Texas Disco Bar ! Come on, it's the Texas Saloon FFS. To my utter delight, the pub, although obviously refurbished, maintains the exact same design and layout of the 80's. moreover the music played ever night wa pretty much 80's stuff.......Utterly fantastic. On more than one occasion i found myself just sitting taking in the atmosphere and remenising. 35 years after 1st being in the "Texas" I'm back and the feeling was overwhelming.
I took time out from the the Stag weekend non stop drinking to walk around the town. I took in a match at the football ground. (i still follow CF Lloret on Twitter), I went in to the Hotel Samba, to stand gazing over the key hole shaped pool and recall the great times i had there. I walked through Fenals and past Buzby's (sadly it was shut during my afternoon visit), I walked to the ever impressive Cala Banys, and sat and had a drink, and then walked the length of the promenade before returing through the utterly fantastic shopping streets of Lloret, stopping on more than one occasion for a coffee and just to sit there smiling to myself that I was back in my favourite town.
Now, obviously I am aware that the Late reat Steve and Rish have left us for the shiny bar in th sky, but i often wonder about Phil. He Managed the Texas for many years before moving on to Buzby's with Rish. I know Phil origialy came from Freckelton, a small village just 10 or so miles from my home town of Preston. The guy was instrumental in forming my never ending relationship with Lloret de Mar and I've seen dozens of photos of him on the Old stuff site, some of which he's wearing an Admiral England shirt that i gave him in 1983.
I know this forum isn't frequented as much as it was anymore, but hopefully one or two of you will read my droning on and perhaps know where Phil now resides, or id=f infact he's stll with us. Im sure he must be.
If not, read my ramblings, think back, and remember the great times. I'm glad to announce they certainly aren't over yet. Being back in Lloret this year was a fantastic experience (the weather by the way was dreafull) but so what. It wasn't raing in the Texas. I will be back, the wife who last came with me in 96, isn't over enthusiastic, but I've plenty of time to change her mind. And if not, ther'es always the possibility of a "lads" weekend. Whatever, I will return to the "One and Only LLORETT DE MAR"
